Born in South Africa and raised in the United States from age twelve, Dalzell played several sports before committing to rugby. His earlier experience at centre became the starting point for a move to scrum-half.

Played five seasons at California under Jack Clark. Learning to pass with both hands and kick with both feet helped turn him into a halfback who could run, distribute and control territory.
Won the Woodley Award as the outstanding collegiate player in America. The award marked his emergence from Cal’s championship programme as a future international halfback.
Played scrum-half in Cal’s national-championship season. The university’s archive preserves a named action photograph of Dalzell feeding a scrum alongside Byron Deeter, Jason Davidson, Ted Callagy and Simon Terry-Lloyd.
Made his Test debut against Uruguay while still a Cal player. California’s official international register identifies him as Eagle number 258.
Completed a forty-two-cap USA fifteens career and joined the group of former Golden Bears who captained the national team. Cal’s official publications confirm both achievements.
Captained Cal in a 41–24 victory at Stanford that brought the Scrum Axe back to Berkeley. He kicked three conversions as the Bears survived a strong second-half Stanford rally.
Scored Cal’s first thirteen points—two penalties and a converted try—in the 46–6 regional victory over Air Force. The result secured a place in the national Final Four.
Led Cal into the national championship game after a 62–14 semifinal win over UC Davis. Jack Clark relied on Dalzell and fly-half Dave Stroble to direct the Bears’ attack.
At OMBAC, Mike Saunders worked with him individually on the craft of scrum-half: reading situations, making decisions and applying his skills under pressure. Dalzell credited that mentorship in his contemporary World Cup interview.
Established himself as the Eagles’ first-choice scrum-half in 1998. Ahead of the 1999 World Cup he left an executive-recruiting job to concentrate on rugby and planned a professional career in Europe.
Scored ten points in the United States’ 30–10 win over Tonga in San Francisco. The International Rugby Board’s subsequent series record lists that performance as the USA’s individual single-match points record against Tonga at the time.
Turned a Pacific Rim match in Markham with thirteen second-half points against Canada. His late try and conversion completed an 18–17 comeback victory.
Scored the United States’ try against Ireland at Lansdowne Road in his first Rugby World Cup. The scrum-half’s opportunism briefly checked Ireland’s early momentum.
Played professionally in France for Brive and Montferrand. The Montferrand archive records his move from Brive and his involvement in the club’s 2000–01 and 2001–02 squads.
Selected for the Eagles at Hong Kong and Tokyo under Tommy Smith. A named action photograph shows him attempting to tackle Fiji’s Jope Tuikabe in Hong Kong on 25 March.
Captained the Eagles at the Americas qualifier in Santiago for the 2001 Rugby World Cup Sevens. A 21–17 win over Uruguay secured third place and the USA’s World Cup berth.
Joined Bath from Montferrand as injury cover until the season’s end.
Scored a try as a replacement for Bath against Sale.
Played for Bath at Saracens in the Zurich Premiership. The named match photograph captures his kicking game under pressure from Kris Chesney.
Returned to the international stage as an OMBAC player: the Spanish federation’s World Cup qualifying bulletin identifies his club as OMBAC San Diego and his position as scrum-half.
Returned for a second Rugby World Cup in Australia. Named action images document him directing the USA attack against Scotland at Suncorp Stadium in Brisbane.
Built a second career in coastal North County San Diego real estate and development. As a Dalzell Group partner he leads its Design & Build division, bringing the teamwork and commitment of professional rugby into property projects.
