National service & the OMBAC connection

Ben Oakes captained Navy rugby in 1999 alongside Jeremy Graczyk and earned collegiate All-American honours in 1998 and 1999. Navy Rugby’s Hall of Fame biography records his USA national player-pool selection in 2000–01 and Eagles sevens service at Wellington in 2001. It also explicitly identifies OMBAC among the Super League clubs in his seventeen-year playing career. A long-serving surface warfare officer, he later commanded USS New York and returned to Navy rugby as an assistant coach. He entered Navy Rugby’s Hall of Fame in 2023. He retired from naval service in January 2025 after commanding USS New York. The photograph records his retirement ceremony; his rugby career is documented by Navy Rugby’s Hall of Fame.
